IEEE CIS WCI
IEEE Women in Computational Intelligence (WCI) Meeting
Hosted by Keeley Crockett
IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems
Jeju Island, South Korea
Friday 21st August 2009
This meeting was attended by 22 participants of the Conference. Dr Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier opened the meeting by presenting the current and future activities of the WCI society. She also highlighted the progression women had made within the CIS society; including the fact that Professor Pilar Sobrevilla was to be the next General Chair at IEEE WCCI 2010 in Barcelona.
Dr Keeley Crockett (a member of the IEEE Taskforce on Computational Intelligence in the Market Place), gave a presentation on the “The Transfer of Academic Research on Intelligent Systems into Industry” which described pitfalls and successes of trying to commercialise an academic idea, concept, or “product”.
Finally the meeting held a panel session on Coaching and Mentoring. The panel members: . Dr Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier , Professor Pilar Sobrevilla, Dr Maguelonne Teisseire, Dr Sandra Bringay and Dr Keeley Crockett shared there experiences on coaching and mentoring PhD students and new colleagues in there respective departments. A mentee was also able to share her positive experiences of how mentoring helped her progress in her career. Information about the IEEE Mentoring connection was also provided.
During the meeting, refreshments had been organised by Jo-Ellen B. Snyder. This proved to be a difficult task so special thanks must go to Jo-Ellen for all her hard work. The picture below was taken at the end of the meeting and shows just the women who attended the men for some reason opted out !!
IEEE CIS WCI Meeting Summary
Hosted by Jennie Si, VP Education, on behalf of WCI
June 13, 2009, Atlanta, GA, IJCNN 2009
12noon – 1pm
The meeting went well, a picture of attendees attached. The meeting proceeded according to the agenda suggested by WCI committee chair, Dr. Fahmida Chowdhury, which is attached below. The following is a summary of discussions at the meeting.
- Many technical committees are recruiting female committee members. Women are encouraged to visit technical activities web site, find their respective interest, and contact the committee chairs directly. It is as easy as that to get involved and women are welcome!
- Create a Facebook group for WCI.
- Generate a women members list for advertising activities especially tailored for women members.
- Make use of e-letters for advertising!
- Discussed a possible special issue for women researchers. There are different point of views. Need more specific proposals, not seem mature at this time.
- IEEE Women in Education is a great resource and vehicle, should take advantage of.
- Suggested women’s mentors program, good idea, need someone to take lead keep up with the activities.
IEEE CIS WCI Meeting Agenda
June 13, 2009, 12noon-1pm
Chair - Fahmida N Chowdhury [fchowdhu@nsf.gov]
Jennie Si extended a welcome to all on behalf of Dr. Fahmida N Chowdhury.
Recall - last WCI at the SSCI, discussed two specific items: volunteering for paper reviews, and getting involved in interdisciplinary research - pros and cons of both.
Today - we want to energize more women to get involved with CIS activities
Jennie Si - position/role, and the CIS educational activities.
Draft outline -
- CIS Educational activities and how you (the attendees of the WCI event) can help
- Other ways of getting involved with CIS
- A provocative question: why should you get involved with your professional society? Isn’t it better to simply do your own work, publish, and concentrate on your own career advancement?
- Let’s take a picture before we leave the room
